AMAROO COMMUNITY COOKING PROGRAM

AMAROO COMMUNITY COOKING PROGRAM

Early in 2009 an exciting new initiative was established to provide young people in the Chadstone and Ashwood area the opportunity to increase their life skills through a monthly cooking program. Young people received training in basic hygiene and food safety, learnt the importance of budgeting, had the opportunity to research recipes, and negotiate menu plans based on a healthy living philosophy and a convenience approach.

Current Team Scores:
66 VS 68

Monthly Review

Briana and Dillon competed against each other in this month's "My Kitchen Rocks" competition. Both produced delicious Mexican fajitas and when necessary both worked extremely well as a team in helping one another out.  The competition was fierce with both teams displaying their particular strengths  and they worked especially well as a team. Dillon had excellent preparation techniques and was particularly talented at chopping up his ingredients. Briana's dish was presented beautifully and she was extremely patient with an eye for detail. The competition was so close that the competition saw its first draw. Congratulations to Dillon and Briana for achieving the high score of 36/40.

What happens?

Each session participants take on different responsibilities. You will get the opportunity to cook, serve and plan upcoming menu items. Participants get the chance to experience all roles as the sessions go along. Throughout the year we will dedicate a session to specific cooking techniques, cooking methods, preparation ideas, food safety and food storage to further improve the young peoples knowledge of the culinary world.

Come along and be challenged by our new "My Kitchen Rocks!" competition. This gives all young people the chance to enhance their cooking skills and be judged in teams in the following areas; taste, appearance, presentation, teamwork, technique etc. Monthly reviews of this will be added to the website along with an ongoing group score tally. Join now and get involved!

We encourage the young people to decide on the recipes that we cook at the program and send them home with a cookbook at the end of the year full of all the recipes we've cooked over the past twelve months.
