To coincide with National Youth Week, Monash Young Persons Reference Group (MYPRG) has announced the 2010 Natural Confidence Competition – an art design competition which aims to encourage young people to create an artwork or design to explore what positive body image and diversity means to you.
Following the success of last year's competition, MYPRG has again been awarded another $5,000 Positive Body Image Grant by the Victorian Government Office of Youth to help stage the Natural Confidence Competition.
Organisers are keen to find out how positive body image is perceived by people from all walks of life, different cultural backgrounds and with different abilities.
“Unfortunately, this concept of having a "perfect" image is presented in the media on a daily basis and it has a profound impact on young Australians. We hope this competition provides a platform for the young people of our city to creatively express their ideas about what a healthy and positive body image is,” Monash Mayor Charlotte Baines said.
According to Mission Australia's 2009 Survey of Young Australians, body image was a concern for over a quarter of all respondents and was ranked as the third most important issue for Victorians aged 11-24 years.
Artists aged 15 – 25 years of age who live, study, work or access a service in the City of Monash are invited to email pictures of their artwork along with a completed entry form by Tuesday 4 May.
Unlike last year, the competition is not restricted only to photographic entries so artists are encouraged to be creative.
Submissions to the competition commence today and will close on 4 May. Great prizes will be awarded to the winning entries to be presented in June at the Clayton Community Centre where an exhibition of the shortlisted artworks will be held.
